What is it with Valentine’s Day flowers?

The flowers my parents sent to my office on Valentine’s Day, 2014.

Walking through the aisles at Safeway this weekend, it’s hard to miss the mountain of Valentine’s flowers, balloons, teddy bears, and heart-shaped boxes—reminders that love (even kitschy Hallmark Holiday love) is in the air. It took me back to my office days, watching co-workers receive flowers from their partners and feeling that familiar pang of loneliness. I wanted that experience for myself.

In my late 20’s, my parents started sending flowers to my office every Valentine’s Day, often with a little balloon or a stuffed bear in a red knit sweater. While I was grateful for the thoughtful reminder that I was loved, there was still a void—a longing for flowers from my person. Not my mom and dad.

For many singles, Valentine’s Day can elicit mixed emotions. While it’s easy to focus on what we don’t have, what if we used the day as an opportunity to celebrate love in all its forms? Self-love, friendship, family, and the love we give to others all count. Trust me, I know it’s easier said than done.

So, if this Valentine’s Day feels a little lonely, know you’re not alone. Your person may not have shown up yet, but that doesn’t mean love isn’t present in your life.
